"May I help you" when a customer comes into the store? We all know they hear that everywhere they go. Anyone got anything to keep it fresh and fun and also make customers' 1st impression good..... and different is good.

How may I help you?

NO!... Different is not good!

"WHAT DO YOU WANT???" is different...it's not good!

In fact you don't want anything different...how can I help you is good because you don't want them to have to think! You don't want them thinking that everytime they come in there that they might get a new greeting and feel like they have to think of some snappy answer!

They don't want to feel quizzed! They want to feel like it's easy!

How are you...how can I help you. is exactly what I ALWAYS want them to say!

I would NOT want to hear:

"How's it hanging"
"What'll It Be"

...I don't want people to think my clerks are a smartass...it's the product or service or cost that is unique, not the damn greeting.

Would you go to taco bell more if they said "YO! Quiero taco bell!" instead of How can I help you?

Nope...in fact I'd go far less.

Distinguishing with cute and clever is fine for an adverisement but it's not good for day-to-day customer relations.

Good Morning, afternoon, evening. My name is...

Can I bring to you something you are interested in?
May I show you ?
If they are looking at an item, "that is our newest....
That would look great on you with your eyes, hair, etc....
why don't you try it on......

If coffee or soda available, offer.

("May I help you?")
"I don't know if you can or not."
OR, this can be answered by a yes or no. NOT a good way to start.

"Feeling lucky?"
"Are you a 'seeker' or a 'finder' today?"
"How about those Cubs?"
"Happy?"
"Get you something?"
"Marry me?"
"Would you like fries with that?" (funny in a clothing store)
"Try something on?" (funny in a restaurant)
"Would you like something grey?...No?... Another color? I like to start with just a color. It works better."

We were on a plane and the attendants were bringing the meal. Apparently tired of hearing the remarks every row as he handed out the meals, by the time the attendant reached us, he just smiled brightly and asked, "Slightly burned roll?"
