The German Shepherd Dog (also known as the Alsatian, and by the acronym GSD or simply German Shepherd) is a breed of dog originally bred for herding sheep. Today, based on 2006 American Kennel Club statistics, German Shepherd Dogs are the third most popular breed in the United States with 43,575 registrations.[1] They can also be found working as guide dogs for the blind, police work, guarding, search and rescue, therapy and in the military. Despite their suitability for such work, German Shepherds can also make loyal and loving pets inside the home. They enjoy being around people and other animals, although socialization is critical for young puppies in order to prevent aggressive and dangerous behavior as an adult. German Shepherds are well-suited to obedience, with advanced and prestigious titles available to test both the handler and dog in various schutzhund trials.

A German Sheperd Dog
GDS for short
Go to the American Kennel Club website and click on Breeds and then find German Sheperd Dog under G. This will tell you about the breed. Then click on how to find a breeder.
It is very important to find a good and reputable breeder so you will get a healthy dog that has been bred to avoid the common genetic diseases of this dog.
It may cost more initially to buy a puppy from a responsible breeder, but if you get one from just anyone the dog could very well have hip displasia that will cost you a lot more in vet bills and anguish than otherwise.
Responsible caring breeders who know the breed well should be supported for keeping the breed healthy and whole.
The GSD is a highly intelligent and easy to train dog. I had one and I think you will be very happy with him or her.

German Shepherd. Don't just get one because you like the way it looks. Do lots or research on the breed and after knowing both the good and bad, then decide if the breed is still right for you.

That is a German Shepard.
Be sure to do A LOT of research before you run off and get one. Bad German Shepard owners give the breed a very bad name. BSL often affects these dogs, and they are VERY prone to hip problems.

If you don't even know the name of a dog you shouldn't be getting it. RESEARCH. Or else you are just going to end up causing that beautiful dog pain. They need lots of exercise, and they need to feel like they have a purpose. They also need someone with a firm hand.
A good place to start:
