You avoid getting points if you avoid getting caught (ticket by cop or speed camera). Simple as that.

STAY INDOORS!
You should have seen the lights from quite a way away. If they are green, start to slow down a bit because they are likely to change when you least expect it. The stopping time for red is usually approx. 17 seconds. Unless you are at a megga set of lights when it may take longer to change. Always expect the unexpected, the lights signify a crossing of some sort and is classed as a hazzard and you will always get the idiot who dashes through. Keep reading the highway code, remember all your lessons and one day you may even be an advanced driver. When they show green, remember that is not a signal to boot it! it simply means you can drive on if it is safe to do so.

The driver's experience is irrelevant for a speeding ticket-If You're speeding and get caught, you get fined.(Unless You're a cop going to pick up a takeaway in a patrol car,get clocked speeding en route, then have the excuse that You were diverting to an incident on the radio at the time of the offence, then realise Your presence would be superfluous and just go get the takeaway anyway and head back to the station..) I don't know what Your friend's first 3 points were for (it wouldn't be speeding, would it?) but being aware that a second violation could lose him the license should've been a warning..which didn't work.I'm not sure if an appeal is possible, but if It's his only option to losing the license,He should take it.Dunno if they'd give Him a higher fine in place of the points,though..

"Basically, the traffic light was changing from amber to red, hence I accerlated and went through at red"
You are joking, aren't you? Amber means STOP, the same as red. Hopefully, you will lose your licence very soon, as you are clearly not fit to drive.

Stick to the speed limits and abide by the traffic laws, including STOPPING AT RED LIGHTS!! Once the lights are red thats your queue to stop, you have no time limit or grace, it is immediate.
If the lights change then so be it, stop being in such a hurry or you will end up killing someone.
A heavy right foot and an empty head are a dangerous combination.
Very best regards

You should have stopped when the lights changed to amber. Being a new driver is no excuse - remember your theory test? With a bit of luck you'll do this again and get banned, then we'll all be a bit safer.

If you saw the lights changing from amber to red, you will have had enough time to stop when you saw then changing from green to amber. Or you were driving too fast anyway...
Accept the rap on your knuckles with grace, if you get one, because it will only be your own fault.

Running a red light is an accident that DIDN'T happen.
So, the best thing to do is to ask your court to take a defensive drivers training class.
You could pay an attorney and have HIM do it for you, but, it would be spending more money for doing the same thing yourself.
Not to be taken as legal advice........but it IS something you can handle and since it is your FIRST offense, I doubt if they would "throw the book at you!"
Good luck and I hope this helps! Just remember to drive RESPONSIBLY!!

If you're caught, you're caught, simple as that. If you're a new driver, you ought to know how stupid and illegal it is to do that.
If someone was playing the "amber gambler" game on the cross-street, you could well be explaining yourself to a somewhat higher authority than the courts right now!
I hope this is an attempt at a joke, if it isn't . . .

if you didn't get caught whats the problem. if you did you could say that you were going the speed limit when they changed and decided it would be safer to continue rather than risk skidding. Don't say you didn't notice the lights change untill it was too late or anything that suggest you weren't paying attention or you get another ticket.

No this happened to my neighbour a couple of years ago.
3 pints and a £60 fine.
Learn your lesson next time, you shouldn't even be thinking of building up points. stay within the law and you won't lose your licence.
Remember if you lose it within the first two years due to accumulating points[i think its 6] you will need to re-sit your test
