I know of people who have repeatedly told the doctor what is wrong and it doesn't get attended to until it is too late.

It's a frustrating thing - I know from personal experience. All I can say is that people need to realize that health care is a service industry. If you're unhappy with the service you've been receiving, find new docs. Easier said than done, I know, but necessary nonetheless.

I had to go through several docs before my benign brain tumor was discovered - a pituitary macroadenoma - and it was the size of a GOLF BALL!!! I thank all that's holy I had the good sense to listen to my gut and pursue docs until they listened to me.

There are doctors who don't listen becasue some times what is major to us is minor to them. You can't not advocate for yourself with health care professionals any more than you do it with anyone else. We have to make sure that the medical professionals understand that what we're dealing with it is real and not in our heads. There are also times when the doctor that you're dealing with doesn't know what's wrong with you and he's/she's reluctant to tell you that. I know because I was born with a rare blood disorder that it took them about 4 months to figure out, My parents were told that it wasn't serious and even though I was born with a body rash and threw up blood (what baby throws up blood) that I would out grow it. My mom is a nurse and knew that something was wrong and wouldn't let it go at that. It took a while but they finally figured out what was wrong.

When you go to a Hospital, because you feel sick, and would like some relief for your Illness, the Emergency Doctor, would most likely take your History of Illnesses, you had prior, in trying to find out what it is that ails you. Then come the tests to see if what is wrong with you, determines if he will admit you or give you medicine for it. It is frustrating I know, but sometimes we need to be Patient and wait to see if it is not Life threatening what ails us.

I had a doctor look at my chart and say, "What makes you think you have spina bifida?". What makes me think? Maybe the fact that I've been seeing a specialist for is since the time I was born. Did you think I was watching Grey's anatomy one night and said, oh, I think that's what I have!, It really put me off.

Sometimes they listen, sometimes they just assume, sometimes they immediately suppress some exaggerated descriptions made by patient, sometimes they're irritated... Sometimes they just don't know and Oftentimes THEY ARE LAZY.

Part of their job is actually to listen to you.
