* The pearls are indeed real.

* They are cultured freshwater pearls from China.

* They are color treated black (dyed).

* They are 'baroque', a non-symmetrical potato shape.

* They are knotted on white nylon instead of black silk - typical for low-end beading grade pearls.

* The pearls are larger than 6 mm but smaller than 9 mm.

* The strand of freshwater pearls pictured would wholesale for about $20 in the US. It would retail for $100 to $300 in the US. It would wholesale in China for $5 to $10.

If you are interested in learning more about freshwater pearls try pearl-guide.com. There is a consumer/expert forum there that will teach you everything there is to know about pearls.

They look like freshwater pearls. Which cost a lot less than ocean pearls. But they could be dyed, or they could even be fake.

Can't possibly estimate a price for any of the above, since there's nothing in there for scale, and therefore no way to guess the actual size of the pearls (large ones naturally cost more than teeny ones). Anywhere from $50 to $50,000.

I might guess by the irregularities in shape that they are real, but the photo itself is not of good enough quality to ask for that assessment.

Besides... Why would someone know if they were real or not just because they know something about photography? Try to get a better image and look for a more appropriate section to ask this question. We are "photo experts" and not "jewelry experts."

Jeez, I strand corrected. See the Pearl Professor below. You got lucky with him finding this question here!

a bit fuzzy and knots in a string between each pearl...pearls on a fabric string? i think if they were real only a good photographer could have gotten close enough to take that picture, and since the quality of the picture is bad i'd say the quality of the pearls is fake.

I think this question would be better answered in a gem/jewelry forum rather than photography.
