If you only put studs on one axle, the difference in traction between the two axles could cause control problems while cornering and stopping the car on slippery surfaces. It's safer to have equal traction capability on both axles. This is especially true with front-wheel drive cars.

To add to Jet Doc's answer:
Many places will not mount studded tires on the front only.
More traction on the front causes the rear to slide around when slowing/stopping. This was not a problem with rear drive.

Because you need the traction for stopping and turning too.
simple as.
