You're right, store bought flea products don't work. Have a look at my answers and see how many times I've tried to tell people that!

But that doesn't mean you have to try home remedies, because I'm afraid they don't work either. People are going to suggest garlic and Dawn dish soap, please don't - if these worked there would be no need for proper flea products.

Please get some proper flea treatment from your vets - Frontline, Revolution, Advantage and Advocate are all very good. It's a shame stores aren't licensed to sell these kind of drugs, because if they were they could eradicate all the currenty rubbish they sell - as well as not working, Hartz, Johnson's etc is also quite dangerous.

Get something safe and effective from a vets!

When it comes to fleas you don't just have to treat the dog you have to treat your whole house. I've used this method anytime my dog gets fleas and it always gets rid of them within 24 hours.

1) Bathe your dog with a mild oatmeal shampoo and add eucalyptus oil to the bath water.

2) Sprinkle borax laundry detergent on your carpet and rub in wth a broom. Leave for 24 hours and vaccume.

3) Spray furniture with a standard flea spray for the home.

4) Use Flea drops on your dogs. I use natures guardian. The only thing I've found that works better is Revolution. The natures guardian works even better than frontline or advantage.

5) Keep your yard free of build up weeds, standing water, and piles of leaves or grass.

My dog normally only gets fleas when we watch someone elses dog or at certain times of the year when fleas become more adundant. You also want to keep an eye out for tapeworms since they are contracted from dogs ingesting fleas carrying tapeworm eggs.

Go to the vet and get frontline. If the fleas are so bad that you can't wait for the frontline to start working also ask about Capstar. Capstar is a pill that you give to the dog and starts working within one hr and all ADULT fleas should be dead within four hours. Also ask or due research about how to kill the fleas where your dog sleeps. If you don't do this then getting them off of him is pointless.

Good luck!

This is the remedy which works well on my dog - I mix 10 ml of Eucalyptus oil in a small spray bottle, and spray this mixture onto my Australian Cattle Dog every second day or so, and then brush him..

But in order to keep your dog flea free, you need to ensure that the yard is free of fleas - many shops offer spray on or powder forms to treat the yard.. their bedding needs to be flea free - same treatment as your yard.

Once you have managed fleas in those areas, it will be much easier to control it on your dog.

Hope this helps you out..

I would advise asking your vet, but my preference is Frontline. Advantage also works well, especially Advantage Plus.

Please do NOT use over the counter products or Hartz products or other store products. Some are very dangerous and, generally, they do not work.

If you have a dog in the herding class, no ivermectin unless you know the dog does not have the common ivermec sensitivity.

Go to the vet and buy Frontline, best product out there I think. Also bathe your dog in flea shampoo, remember it has to set on the dog for at least five minutes.

Citronella oil, eucalyptus oil, balsam, citrus peel extract, lavender oil and tea tree oil are some natural products which are effective insecticides for fleas.
