Does repeated play with a wood (say a Callaway GBB II Driver) cause it to lose any of its characteristics that help you hit the ball farther? Can you wear out a shaft? If so, please explain.

Titanium Driver, Yes you can wear them out.

Steel Headed driver, you could smash against rocks for 8 days straight and still not hurt it.

If you ever cut a driver head in half, you will notice that it is manufactured from very thin material, with nothing but foam inside it. The face is also very thin with repeated hits in one spot you can cave the face in (good way to test: get an eye dropper an place water on the face, the water should run off).

The shaft can also have stress fractures, which also constitutes to problems with ball striking. Look at the shaft at the hosel (were it enters the head), especially if the shaft is a couple years old, see if there is any light splits in the shaft. If so replace it, it will only get worse down the track

You can wear out any grooves after about 50,000 or so hits on the sweet spot. This happens more with wedges and irons though instead of drivers. If the seal is cracked you will lose MOI. The only way I know of to wear out a shaft is to break it or increase your swing speed so it doesn't react like it should based upon your swing. If you stand with weight on the end of the shaft like a cane, you can bend a steel shaft or a graphite shaft. The only other way is from continuous miss hits on the top or bottom of the club. This can create dents that will affect the ball flight.

No and no. You can check the club-face to make sure it does not become concave. When i was playing a lot i made the face of a driver cave in a little , but this was from thousands of hits and the metal may have been faulty. As far as the shaft i would say that you cannot wear it out.

No, I used to play with a set of Tommy Amour-- clubs with the steel shafts and leather grips... Tommy signature clubs were around the 1940's. I never had trouble using them. The problem may not be the club -- and might be the clubber (you). Clubs don't really wear out unless you play on concrete...If you don't believe me buy a new driver -- see what action is going on...good luck.

Yes, it sure is.

As things age they loose flexability and reaction time. Both are important to a driver for shaft flex and moi

yes, you can cave the face in.. its not very noticable but the face of the club is somewhat dome shaped, not flat and if hit many times it can be wore flat
