I got rigid lenses a few months ago. I have been wearing them sporadically -- I'll wear them for a few days, decide I can't take it any longer, and then not wear them at all for a couple of weeks. I am trying to wear them all the time now, though, so my eyes can get used to them. (Yes, the fit is correct according to the eye doctor and I am using the comfort rewetting drops the doctor recommended.)

My question is... will my eyes ever get used to these so that I feel perfectly normal? At first, it tickled too much to look up, so I was looking down all the time. Now looking up is easy enough, but it tickles the corners of my eyes too much when I look to the sides. My fiance says I am blinking a lot. I don't want to be the weird girl with funny eyes. Has anyone else experienced this? How long did it take to go away?

What you are having difficulty with is the sensation your lids feel when they move across the lens edge on a blink. You are not actually feeling the lens on the eye itself. Adapation to a gas perm lens depends therefore upon your ability to adapt to the lens edge sensation. If you have worn them this long and are still having trouble it sounds like you need some help. This is a trick I learned from an old experienced eye doctor some 24 years ago. It's called "anterior lens edge roll". What this means is your doctor (if he knows how to do this) can take your contact lens and using a polishing wheel can alter the front side of the edge of the lens. By smoothing and flattening down the anterior edge structures you can dramatically decrease the lid sensation you feel on the blink. I can't count the number of gas perm patients I have helped adapt with this simple but effective technique. Ask your doctor if he can alter the countour of the anterior lens edge. Hope this helped.

I got RGP lenses over two years ago, and now I don't know what I'd do without 'em. They felt a little weird at first, but now they're as comfortable as can be. I clean 'em in the morning, wet 'em, and wear 'em all day. They only hurt if you get dirt or dust in your eyes...

The best thing about RGP lenses is you can use them up to about five years, as long as you take care of them. Soft lenses don't last nearly as long...

Anyhow, good luck with your contacts. Keep the rewetting solution handy... Your lenses should feel like they're not even there eventually. :)

i wear RGP lenses. they itch occassionally but its fine. the thing is, u can't wear them for a few days and then stop wearing them. i didn't wear them for a weekend and i had to re-adjust to them! just keep them on, and it will be fine after a few days.
