What a cute dog. I think there are many things you could have done to improve this picture. #1 get on eye level with the pooch, #2 turn the camera sideways into portrait mode and #3 turn on your flash for a little light in the eyes so that they look more lively. That and taking into account DrSam's exposure info should improve your work.

Just my take on it...
It's easier to explain with a visual aid, so see:

I think the dog is a bit overexposed, say by a full stop. Get in your time machine and try to underexpose a bit. If you are using EV compensation, EV (-1.0) might have been enough. If you are using manual controls, click the shutter speed up one full notch.
I LIKE the softer background, which so MANY people come here asking, "How do I make the background out of focus?" I don't like so much the way that it sort of competes for attention with the subject, but that's because he and the background are both so light. Again, underexposing one stop would have accomplished this.
As it is, I tried to alter these values in Photoshop. Feel free to download my version if you like. Leave a comment criticizing it, too, if you wish. Fair is fair.

Pretty good! Advice: Use a polarizing filter. Notice how the bright light looks good, but the scattered light also obscures the texture of the dog's fur and background? A polarizing filter would make the image alot clearer, by removing light coming in at an angle. This makes textures look more intense, and prevents them from getting that "washed-out" look.

It's cute, but part of the ear is cut off. It would have been better if you turned the camera.
Keep up the good work!
