Both of his parents had papers, but the breeder did not have papers for the puppies. The breeder said I could get them later if I wanted to. How do I do this??

You will need the name of the sire and dam, plus the breeder. You go to the AKC site and go to the registration part. There is a form you fill out, but you absolutely need the data from his mother, father, and the breeder.

It should be written on the receipt you got from the breeder what his lineage is - if not, ask her for it so that you can get your puppy registered. If she is an ethical breeder, she will have the records for his lineage.

Good luck, but you really don't need papers to have a wonderful pet you know.

The breeder was probably lying if she didn't give them to you WITH the dog. You were probably swindled by a puppymill or backyard breeder. They do that a LOT.

"If you're wondering how to get papers for your dog, it's fairly simple. When you buy a purebred puppy, the breeder should give you a registration application that must be completed with the puppy's registered name and signed by both you and the breeder. Include the applicable processing fee and you'll receive your puppy's new registration certificate in a few weeks. The AKC website has an option to apply for dog registration online." excerpted from this article:

You don't need "papers" to prove you have a great dog. If you love your dog and he/she loves you, that's all that matters.

As was mentioned earlier, the breeder has to register the litter in order for the pups to be eligible for papers. The breeder also has to select if the pups will be eligible for full registration (breeding rights) or limited registration (competition & membership only rights). I would talk to the breeder about getting them to turn in their portion of the paperwork

The only way to get the papers is if the breeder registers the litter.
If they don't register the litter then you won't get papers.

You have to get the papers through the breeder.

The only type of AKC registration you will be able to get now is an ILP, which will be helpful if you want to show in obedience, agility, earthdog, etc. (but not conformation). If you have no interest in showing I would probably not bother with it. There is no age limit on getting your dog ILPed so you can change your mind later.

You need to get in touch withthe breeder.
Be prepared if they didn't come with papers good chance either they will ask for more ornot have.
did you get a contract and was teh dog originally sold as AKC pups or just purebred pups???
Some states have laws about how long they have to get the papers to you.
Then it's up to you to register the pup.

If the breeder did not provide you with papers, the puppy is not able to be registered. They lied to you.

Get both papers, from the mother and father, and get a blood test from your Dach. The mother already have the blood registered in the AKC system, so you'll just have ot prove that this dog came from both AKC parents. Just send it in, and they should return everything along with papers for your dog.

ADDED: Ok, thumbs down for something I've done?

You have to get them through the breeder. They have to register the litter and provide you with an individual registration application.
