You need to configure firefox to ask you to select a download destination. At default settings, it automatically saves the file onto your desktop. To change it, goto Tools -> Options -> And click "Always ask me where to save files". You don't need to reinstall firefox, duh.

Actually I think you'll find it is downloading it, just that it isn't asking you where you want to save it to.

Tools-> Options-> Main tab

Under the downloads section, check the box 'Show the downloads window when downloading a file'

Also make sure the check box 'Always ask me where to save files' is selected as well.

One of my favorite (and I have come to believe most essential) Firefox add-ons is the Download Statusbar, which provides "granular" control over to which folder downloads are done, and a display, on the status bar at the bottom of the browser screen, of the progress of each download! I highly recommend it before you do ONE MORE download! (Download Statusbar also gives you the unusual option of fetching and destroying a "temporary" download from your system!)
