It says who the Lord loves he chastises-disciplines for their own learning.Punishment I believe are for those who are intentionally wicked. I've been chastised but not punished.
He's a merciful God overall.

Its very important to read a few verses before and after the verse in question and 9 times out of 10 you will be able to answer your own question. Yes God has 'punished' me to some degree but I consider it all discipline and in the end it is all for my good. Just like a good Father does to and for His children.

“My child,[e] don’t make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and don’t give up when he corrects you.
6 For the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he punishes each one he accepts as his child.”[f]

7 As you endure this divine discipline, remember that God is treating you as his own children. Who ever heard of a child who is never disciplined by its father?

8 If God doesn’t discipline you as he does all of his children, it means that you are illegitimate and are not really his children at all.

9 Since we respected our earthly fathers who disciplined us, shouldn’t we submit even more to the discipline of the Father of our spirits, and live forever?

Discipline is not always punishment.

I wasted a HUGE amount of money 7 years ago. My punishment is that I have to pay off a loan.
Perhaps it is more of a consequence rather than a punishment.

I think ALL parents discipline and punish their children. It helps them to learn.
Do you?

Only those who believe in God get punished by God. The rest get punished by those around them

No Ido not suffer from hallucinations, nor do I accept "gods punishment" as being why life can go wrong, thats a weak perspective to take and morally wrong, take responsibility for your own actions...

Yes, I have been through my trials, and am proud for what I have been through so far. A smart man with any sight past his nose can see this. This message won't make sense to the short-sighted, look more long term.

I think we must often have felt that things that go wrong for us are as a result of our pride or foolishness.

This, sadly, is the way we learn and it makes us the stronger if we accept such chastisement that comes our way.

MY god doesn't punish me, the puts me through trials to make me stronger and test me. Not everyone passes the test and they don't end up in Asgard.

This will never happen. Zeus, Odin, Ahuramazda, etc. are as likely to punish or reward me as Yahweh or any other imaginary gods.

If punishment comes, it will come after death. For only God knows why I did what I did, and so only He may judge me for it.
