I am making my sister and brother-in-law a wine basket for christmas because they love wine!

What snacks should I include?
Here's what I have so far:
* cheese swirls
* chocolate
* candy canes
* cheese spread
* crackers...
That's all I can think of.

Thanks for the help.

I think you've got all the bases covered...if you want to add more, look for unique cheese-flavors but nothing too strong or they will overpower the wine. A mild sausage or small ham is always welcome.

You could add a couple of hand-painted or etched wine glasses (try a local art studio) so that whenever they drink wine, they will always think of you. :-) Some other add-ons: cloth napkins with a modern design; a unique corkscrew is a neat touch; vacuum-saver with bottle caps; cloth wine bag, picnic blanket...

Think of it as a "party in a basket," for a picnic or tailgate....ready to go!

It's a rare wine that pairs well with sweets, so forget chocolate and candy canes (except as decoration, maybe?). Most salty foods go nicely with either red or white wines, except for nuts.

Try two or more different kinds of crackers and cheeses, crisp breadsticks, a French baguette (thin loaf of bread), some grapes (red or green seedless), and a DVD of "Sideways" if they don't have it and are wine lovers.

Ixnay on the Riesling. you want something finished bodied. a reliable California Chardonnay, or a pinot noir. i think of a incredibly spiced Barbera with salt and vinegar chips could be exciting.
