My dad experienced chest pain one day, and the doctor referred him to the hospital a few months ago for a stress test and a heart scan procedure. However, he became worried about the procedures of the test during the heart scan. He claimed to have seen the technician inject some radioactive fluid into his veins via the I.V. After the injection, the doctor put the needle into a champagne-like cup, upside down, and didn't immediately dispose of it properly, into a disposal can for needles. What my dad is worried about are the needles, because he fears that they have the potential to be reused, as what he had seen that day. He seems to be afraid to be affected by HIV, hepatitis, and other illnesses. So what are the chances here of the needles being reused?

Thanks!

Trust me, needles are not re-used. Can you imagine the lawsuits that would be taken against such a facility that did?? Maybe the container for disposable needles was full and the needle was placed into a cup until the container was replaced. In addition, most injectable needles automatically retract so that there is no chance of injury from a needle stick which, would also prevent re-use because once the needle retracts itself, there is no way that it can be re-used. I hope that this helps.

If that hospital is reusing the needles they should be shut down and sent to jail. Thats very dangerous and illegal. We wont get into all the laws and regulations of proper disposal of needles you can figure that out. Needles are supposed to be capped and sent to the bio hazard box that hangs on the wall of each room in a hospital Needles beeing reused well unless that hospital is in the alleyway and only a few people go there. The chances are extremely slim. The doctors and nurses are trained for this. They know how to dispose them and all that.

Needles are absolutely not reused in a hospital. Your dad's fears sound a little unusual and a bit paranoid. How old is he? Is it possible that he might be experiencing some dementia or other mental illness?

Almost never, and then only in some little podunk rinky-dink place where the staff doesn't care about the patients, or in a 3rd world clinic where they can't afford new needles. If your dad was in a regular clinic in a modern country, I think getting a used or dirty needle would be the least of his worries.
