Canon lenses are actually some of the best out there. You have full manual exposure control on the Canon, and better image quality. SD cards, which the Canon takes, are cheaper than what Sony takes. You can compare the images on imaging-resource.com. CNET says the image quality is better.

I would go for the Sony. Surely Canon has the reputation and it rules the professional market, but in the compact zone, Canon lacks a lot.
Canon still uses a pretty weak sensor and only decent imagea processing in the consumer camera range.

The Sony DSC cameras are known to have extremely good results (for a compact). I would recommend the H7 however (about $100 more I think).

Take a look at http://www.dpreview.com/ and see what each product review has to say. They usually post sample galleries with photos -- see if one clearly stands out.

Either way, you can't go wrong. As for me, I'm partial to Canon.

Also, before you return the Canon - compare prices on memory. You will quickly find you need more than the internal memory either camera has. I would recommend 512Mb as the absolute minimum. As for memory pricing, the Sony uses proprietary memory sticks which are typically higher priced than a comparable SD memory card.

You did not say what model you bought but regardless, you should respect your fathers opinions, however it is you who will use this camera and the one you like will take better pictures for you just because you like it better. If your dad wants a camera for himself and you are buying it for him, you would make him happiest by buying him the camera he wants regardless of what you like best.
And just remember this... Canon is the choice of most professional photographers and the official camera of all NFL photographers so you cannot go far wrong with a Canon. In my business, Canon is the only system I use, and over the years I have pretty much tried them all.

Meh, the only difference is the Sony has built in Memory. But if you have a memory card already, that shouldnt be a problem. Yours is the exact same basically. Its not worth it to take it back. However, the Sony has .1 more migapixels. You wouldnt ever notice a difference.
