While hunting whitetails in the great Wisconsin woods I was told by a fellow hunter that if a buck gets shot in the antler it will be confused and not be able to keep it's balance for a while. Is this true?

NO......A Whitetails sensory nerves for balance are centered in it's inner ear much like a humans ear. With the exception of a few seconds of confusion, it would have no effect on the Deers balance what-so-ever. If in fact it was the truth, then Bucks that loose their antlers thru fighting would have their "balance" affected too
FYI .....There ARE in fact sensory nerves in a Whitetails Antlers, and it is a proven fact when Deer shed their antlers that they feel pain as a result..It just doesn't have a direct effect on their balance...

every year of a bucks life the antlers should get bigger up until the age of 7 but if things happen like an injury the antlers might not grow correctly the following year also once an animal reaches full maturity some of the antler growth can be on a decline most growth is genetic and nutritional and no they dont get a point every year

There are no sensory organs in a deer's antlers, but they are attached to it's scull. I do believe that a bullet hitting antlers hard enough could throw it off balance as much as hitting it in the head with something lighter.

My buddy was using .00 buck shot, one of the pellets hit the buck one the base of his antlers and it broke his skull cap in half. The deer was very off balance as he laid on his side spun in circles throwing brain matter around. I would have to say it may indeed have an effect on balance.

Ha ha---I shot a deer in the antler!It popped it off with such force that it shattered it's skull.Dropped in it's tracks.Certainly a deer could be stunned by a less solid impact,I would think.Too many factors to answer yes or no.Just happened to me once.

It gets a nasty bang on the head, so it may be a bit stunned for a while. I wouldn't say it's an effect you can count on.

It's possible, but you should always aim to kill. You don't want to leave a confused wounded animal running around the woods to die.
