I'm writing a reasearch paper on why the US should watch out for china economically and I thought in my intro i'd include a quote about why the US shoud watch their backs, so any quotes that talk about not being able to be number one forever would be tremendiously helpful! Thanks!

When I read your question, a tagline once used by Avis car rentals came to mind: "We're number two. We try harder." I know it's the opposite of what you were looking for, but it fits your overall theme.

Competition is what a free market is all about; however the recent scandals -- such as those involving children's toys painted with lead paint -- will have manufacturing running back to the United States. Frankly, I think China could end up being in economic ruin if they do not keep pace with issues involving product safety laws, the use of child labor and the environment. In other words, if China wants to continue their economic climb they better learn how to try harder.

Here are some additional quotes:

“It's easy to have faith in yourself and have discipline when you're a winner, when you're number one. What you got to have is faith and discipline when you're not a winner.” ~~Vince Lombardi

“The loyalties which center upon number one are enormous. If he trips, he must be sustained. If he make mistakes, they must be covered. If he sleeps, he must not be wantonly disturbed. If he is no good, he must be pole-axed.” ~~Winston Churchill

“The trouble with being number one in the world - in anything - is that it takes a certain mentality to attain that position, and that is something of a driving, perfectionist attitude, so that once you do achieve number one, you don't relax and enjoy.” ~~Billie Jean King

“Becoming number one is easier than remaining number one.” ~~Bill Bradley
