Ok I have 2 Chihuahua's puppies (almost 6 months) and I wanna switch them to Canidae! I here its like the Best food there is! Well the formula I wanna feed them.... Chicken and rice.....They come in 33 lbs (wayyyy to much for mine! lol) 16.5 pounds and 6.6 pounds!
My question is....My dogs have to have 248 oz of food a month. 1/2 cup/day each! (im a math and science nerd!) anyways....and the 16.5 pound one is just enough at 264 oz.....but the 6.6 oz is only 105.6 oz. Ive heard that if you keep food for them too long, they wont eat it anymore......soo....i was wondering which one should i get? the 16.5 lbs bag for the whold month or the 6.6 pund bag 2-3 times a month???.....its alot cheaper to get the 16.5 lbs bag....but if my dogs wont eat it, it would be money wasted anyways....

so which should i do??? 16.5 lbs or 6.6lbs???

**** sry if thats confusing! also any info and experieces with this food would be a great help! Ive already been on the site. Thanks!

I buy food for my ferrets and dog in larger quantities and keep the food in airtight containers. It's worked really well and the food stayed nice and fresh. The containers I use I found at Target. They're tall and narrow and can hold up to 25lbs of food. The lids lock down tight with a latch on the front. Look for them in the pet supply section.

FYI - you may want to shop around online for the food. It's often much cheaper online. Though bags of food are heavy a lot of online stores have really low shipping rates or even no shipping charges.

Good for you for wanting to get your pups on a healthy food. Far too many people feed theirs grocery store garbage!

I see people have covered how to switch foods, but I will tell you now that as long as you store the food in an airtight container, it should last 3-4 MONTHS. Dog food is pretty good since it has no moisture in it, and keeping it in an airtight container will keep it fresh. I would suggest buying the 16.5 lb on in that case.

I would start with the smaller bag this time around, because you want to ease them onto it (mix it with their old food) and make sure they like it and respond well to it before you commit to a big bag.

I'm switching my dog to Canidae too, I've heard nothing but good things about it and it's really not any more expensive than any good quality dog food out there.

A month is not too long to keep it, the stuff sits on the shelves for ages.

If you're worried about keeping it fresh, put it in smaller containers and store it in the fridge or freezer. Take out the containers as you need them.

You may want to try little sample bags first, if your store has them. Your pups may or may not like it!! I got All Life Stages first and they loved it, but then I goofed and got lamb and rice, and they don't really like it. To me, it's all about how big of a bag you don't mind lifting, storing, etc. The price difference is nominal; just do what the puppies want.

Um. Its not a good food. Royal Canin and Nutro are about the only two good premium foods there are. Canidae is over priced. Science Diet is awful.
