Yeah, there is 2 black families in my church...no wait...3, but 1 is inactive.

-------------

There were many blacks who had the priesthood before 1970s, the first black priesthood holder was in 1833...only 3 years after the church was officially formed. He, Elijah Abel, was in the Quorum of the 70. His life is a great story.

Yes. In fact, we were the only church that allowed blacks to worship along with the rest of the congregation during segregation. We even let them drink out of the same water fountain, and use the same bathrooms as all the white people (tongue in cheek!!).

It wasn't blacks that weren't allowed to have the priesthood, it was only a certain group. That's not something I understand real well, since I was only like 3 when it changed.

We do have a few black members in my ward, and there is a lot of Tongan people in our ward too. We have quite a few Hispanic members, and some oriental members too. We even have a few members from Europe. Yup.. we are a varied group, but it's good!

*EDIT**

Here's a website of famous mormons. There is a lot of them, so have fun!!!!!

Anyone can convert to the Mormon faith. Mormons believe it is the same Church organization that Christ personally set up when he lived on the earth, and has now be restored to the earth again. The same structure, ie apostles, prophets, etc exist in the Mormon church as did in Christ's day.

Some of the very first converts back in Joseph Smith's day were black.

In the Mormon church there is no difference made for race. Any man of any race can convert to Mormonism and hold any office or leadership position.

Yes Blacks have ALWAYS been able to be members of the LDS church and worship right along side white members- even in the day and age of segregated churches of most religions in America. Which really put us leaps and bounds ahead of other faiths at the time. In 1978 all worthy males were allowed to receive the priesthood.

Gladys Knight is Mormon...need I say more?

EDIT: Blacks have ALWAYS been allowed to hold the Priesthood (contrary to what many have said here.) It was in 1978 when they were allowed to hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. If you want to know what that is, go to your local LDS church and ask all the questions you want.

Sampling error, you see two Mormon missionaries occasionally in the UK. I bet you also find you don't ever see any any Female-American Mormons. Or Taiwanese Mormons.

I'm Mormon, and my wife is black. We were married in a Mormon temple, where the officiator told us that God approved of our marriage. My wife is treated well at our church, as are the other African American members of our congregation. I've had a black bishop in several different Mormon congregations of which I've been a member.

Yes....ask Gladys Knight

Unlike other people have said. We have always thought blacks were humans and we never had slaves.
