my recipe calls for a food processor to combine flour & butter/shortning together. I don't own one. Can I use a mixer or should I hand mix? If hand mix, how?

You don't need a food processor for this step. Just be sure the butter and shortening are cold. They should be ice cold. Either use a pastry blender, two knives, or your hands. Cut the butter into tiny pieces and add the shortening to the flour. With your fingertips crumble the butter and the shortening into the flour. They should be blended enough so the flour now resembles something like Bisquick or wet sand. This may take a while so just keep at it.

You can use an inexpensive tool that cuts the shortening, into the flour, or if you don't have that, use two knifes like my mother used to do. I have a food processor and have never used it to make a pie crust.

here is an easy crust recipe that you should try:
2 c. white flour
2 Tbsp. wheat germ
1 tsp. salt
2/3 c. oil
1/3 c. cold water

Just mix and role out and then your done. I use it for all my cooking needs. You can find wheat germ at any grocery store.. well most of them

I've been making them the Crisco way for years.....don't work it too much. That will make your pie tough:
