If you decided you wanted to get into ministry (through your church) and as you were filling out the volunteer form, you find out that they want to do a back-ground check...what would you do?

I submitted to one when I became a greet / usher. Later, I got into the Jail Ministry and the county wanted to do one.

I have nothing to hide.

I have had to do this when I volunteered to help in the toddlers class. The reason for this was because the church was making sure there were no pedefiles, of which I don't blame them. Just because one goes to church does not mean they are what they seem to be. I am sure there are
perverts in the churches, just watch the news. I agree with the churches doing this.

Swiss Guard, I do understand where you are coming from, but I feel compelled to agree with the others. With child molestation and what have you, I cannot fault anyone for wanting a background check. If God really calls someone into a particular ministry, He will pave a way to make it happen. I am understanding both sides of the story.

Allow them to do the background check and be thankful that your church cares! If you have something in your background that you are worried about, go to your pastor and speak with them about it before it is revealed in the background check and discuss the particulars of the event with them. They may or may not choose to overlook your previous indescretion.

With all the scandals going on in churches, it is important that people given any kind of position is at least without a criminal record. It is very unfortunate, but churches are a big target for some types of crimes because of the trust factor.

Everyone who is active in any ministry at my home church are required to file an application and have a "Live Scan" and fingerprinting performed, or they cannot be involved in ministry work. It is quick and easy. Mine was completely painless and the ink washed off my fingertips with a little soap and water. Nothing to be afraid of.

These days it is wise to initiate background checks on those who serve, especially when they work with kids.
