Well if it runs away after 1 shot you have no choice...LOL! If I got a good heart shot and I was satisfied with it I might not shoot again.... if the shot was high I would try a second shot.... it depends.... but a second shot surely wont hurt your chances of getting your dinner ;)

Well it is better to be a good shot and take the deer with one round, but lets be honest even the best of us get off a bad shot every now and then.
That being said I believe if you are sure you still hit the animal well then let it run soon it should fall. that is better then blazing away and ruining the meat, or sending bullets all over creation. If the deer is on the run your chances of missing it are greater. If you hit the deer wait about 20 minutes and find the blood trail and start tracking. you may need to put one more shot in it to finish it off but a lot of times that is not the case. I make it a point not to shoot a animal that is running away from me because if you hit it you will most likely destroy the hind roast and all the other meat in that area. If you don't hit it you will spook it into running harder.

I am a fan of the magnum calibers for just this reason (30-06 and above). Right now I'm using a 7mm rem mag
If you hit a deer and he doesn't go right down with that, you best shoot again because you didn't hit it good.
With something like a 243 or even 270 or sometimes even more, the deer can run when hit solid.
Then you have the choice --- and I would probably shoot.
However, the problem with shooting again is that you might lose track of where you shot him or where you last saw him (something essential to tracking).

If you're sure of your shot, you can wait. It's generally better to get in a good second shot if you can, though, because accidents do happen. I've had bullet failures cause a surface wound and no significant penetration, using miniatures like 6mm Remington. And we all hit them wrong on occasion, either with a poor shot or a deflection from a twig. Also, it's a good habit to get into if you plan to hunt where there are animals that hunt back. Dangerous game should always be shot 'til they stop, and if you're in the habit from deer hunting, you won't be caught admiring your first shot when that Cape buff or grizz takes offense.

If you can take a second shot that isn't just "flinging lead" take it. It's better to have 2 killing shots than to assume you've made a good hit and have the animal run off and suffer a slow death. If you are going to hunt, you owe it to the animal to make the quickest, cleanest kill possible. You can't kill a deer too dead, but you could lose one after the "perfect shot".

This is a "judgment" call......If you make a good clean fatal shot the first few seconds after the Deer is hit you will have the answer to your question. It will be pretty obvious if it going to go down, or going to try and run off. Use your own judgment and take a second shot if you think it necessary

One good, clean shot is better, but a second shot won't hurt, if you're confident you can hit a running deer.

One good shot is better than a dozen bad shots. Less damage and less chance of spoiling meat. Kinder to Bambi too.
But do what you have to, a couple of holes is still better than Bambi dieing days later.
