I enjoy seeing most everyone's ideas, answers and the like but I am wondering why this one simple statement is twisted into hellish behavior. You don't actually have to be Christian to understand this concept but why do we neglect the sheer power of love. You might think this is drippy and that's OK.
Why have conditions? Why not just love? (No I have not been hitting the eggnog with rum early:) All thoughts welcome. Namaste

Yogini...It all seems to arise out of the ego. We come from Love and will return to Love, but in this limited reality we cannot see the other as ourselves. Until we are one in the One, love will be experienced within the parameters of limitation and separation. The false self is self-involved, self-cherishing, self-satisfying and sees the other as separate from itself. Thus, we seek always for our own gratification and happiness, willing to "give love" only if another will meet our specifications or conditions-- no matter how inconsequential we think our demands are, they are still conditions to our love. Unconditional love flows from the Source, and makes no demands. As to eggnog with rum--it is the only way to toast the New Year, with a tipple here and there prior to the countdown. Would you mind if I join you for a wee dram or two...? I am Sirius

You did a great injustice to your spouse. This isn't some new realization, you new all along that you didn't love your spouse, that you loved your ex. Now you have destroyed this person because you are a selfish idiot. How sad.....you never should have married, you never should have started another relationship if your heart was still with your ex. Learn to love your spouse under these conditions? These are not conditions, this is a situation you created. You should tell your spouse that you do not love him, that you are a selfish person and married him out of convenience. That way while you are moping around he doesn't think that he did something wrong, that he isn't good enough for you, because you aren't good enough for him! With these feelings your heart will never belong to your husband because you will never allow it. How sad they allow people like you to get married!

Curious...I was looking through several versions of the Bible, and no where could I find "unconditional love"??
No man alive has EVER loved anyone without "conditions". Whether they admit it or not.
Love is the MOST powerful of all our emotions! Throughout the ages people have died for love, cheated for love, been jealous for love, even lusted for love. etc etc...
No one can "just love" anyone. There are "rules" to "every game"..and among humans love is the highest stakes "game" of them all!
Absolutely God has "conditions" when it comes to Love, He did after all Create us, and loving us to His utmost, gave us each an amazing gift called FREE WILL!
Most of us also have a "brain" with which to examine ALL the facts, and make informed decisions about whom we wish to love, and why. God does NOT "force" anyone to "Love Him"...that IS our free will choice.
However like ALL choices there are rewards & CONSEQUENCES. The final decision about what you want to "believe" is in your "court". (No conditions whatsoever)
But consider this....is what you believe strong enough to "sustain you" throughout ALL ETERNITY, if the Bible is correct?
"It truly is a fearful thing to fall into the Hands of a Living God"!
I would rather live my life as IF (and I do believe there IS) a God...die & find out there is not....than to live my life as if there is no God...die & truly find out THERE IS!
The "choice" truly is your own, however SO are the "consequences" of that choice!

Why have conditions? Why not just love?
That was precisely what Jesus came to say.

As we are accustomed to thorns, we can not appreciate the fragrance of flower. Love is flower. hate is thorn, when we love the thorns so much , and thorns are eternal, never dying, always making their presence felt. We have almost forgotten the existence of Flower.
further , flower is not so eternal as thorns are. flower goes in one night. so people are afraid , why love the flower. and feel sorry when flower withers away. so Love too is so delicate that Grossness of Hatred is Over Powering the little minds and not allowing us to seek and search for Love without conditions.
we want to be assured of Love , for Ever. and hence we ourselves are creating the trap of conditions.

What conditions are you referring to? The ones we ourselves put on it? There are no restrictions to love. God's love is completely unconditional (John 3:16 "For God so loved the WORLD, that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life") Not only that, but God defines what love is in the Bible (John 15:13 "Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.") And who was it who layed down his life for us? Jesus. Yes, the Romans actually did the deed. But Jesus, being God, had the power to put a stop to it, and didn't. The Bible actually says He descended to hell for the 3 days he was dead. He did it for us, so we wouldn't have to pay the price for our own sins. Is there a condition on this love? No. There is nothing we could possibly do to earn it. It's given freely. And as any gift, in order for it to do any good, we have to be willing to accept it. If there's any possible condition on this love, that's it. Accept it. Accept that Jesus is the Son of God (and God Himself) and that He freely gave His life in place of yours.... and the kicker..... that He rose again from the dead on the 3rd day to conquer death and is alive in Heaven today. You accept this, you have received free love from God, and will party in Heaven someday, right by His side.
I can't wait! :)

I firmly believe real love has no expectations whatsoever.
Give me a jealous god and I know right away there is no love in him/her/it. There is no jealousy or fear in love.
