Yes, wild sage, ie: prairie sage. I found some at a mexican import store. It's commonly known as a smudge stick. It comes bundled tightly with string. You light it and let it smoke. If you are cleansing your house, you carry it around the perimeter and through your house, then leave it in the chimney to burn away.
It's common to see smudge sticks at group gatherings. I always saw them during drum circles. There are different types of sage that are made into smudge sticks. White sage, I remember, was peppery and strong. Green sage was pleasent and mild. I prefer the latter.

Any sage will work, if you believe it will. But most prefer Prairie sage. I have several bundles from a couple of the reservations in S. Dakota.

Hello Sophie - a fascinating question indeed. In my experience sage is normally used to cleanse a home after the entities have been removed. It will not open up a door to the occult. Sorry if this is not the answer you really wanted. Regards.

There are thousands of species of sage. The one we use is white sage, or more specifically "salvia apiana". The shop where I buy my smudge sticks and raw leaf said their supplier is based on New Mexico. The leader of the circle I attend said hers was from California.

I most often use white sage and cedar for smudging. You can buy it in bundles ready to go for smudging in various online pagan stores, or at a local metaphysical shop if you're near one.
