I'm thinking about buying the Winsor Pilates 20-minute dvd workout. They claim that doing it 3 times a week will result in weight-loss and toning. I'm quite sceptical about the weight-loss bit though. Has anyone done this workout and lost weight without doing the diet they provide? What were the results?

losing "weight" on the scale doesn't mean it's fat. with out a balanced diet of protein, high fiber carbs, vegetables and healthy fats body fat loss will be minimal at best. the diet that you follow determines the body composition not the exercises that you partake in. you are what you eat

To lose 1 lb per week, you have to burn 3,500 calories. That means either burning it through exercise, or eliminating 3,500 calories from your diet per week, OR doing a combination of exercise and dieting.

If you don't want to cut back on calories but still want to lose weight, then you have to burn the 3,500 calories through exercise. So to do so in 3 exercises per week, that means you'd need to burn 1,116 calories per exercise. And.... being that on average you burn 600 calories for running for an hour... I doubt that a 20 minute session of pilates burns anywhere close to that.

It's good to tone up though, and Pilates does build muscle which burns more calories than fat, so it's not going to negatively affect you. I'd say do the Pilates, but add a cardio exercise to your routine as well if you don't want to diet.

Yes, it's possible to lose weight if you exercise without changing your diet, but you won't lose anywhere near as much.

Whenever you exercise on a regular basis, your body will burn calories and increase your metabolism, which will help to lose weight. If you have an unhealthy diet, you will still lose some weight from working out, but changing to a healthy diet will help to reduce more calories which will help to reduce the fat even more. Good luck!
