Catholics claim continuous authority from Peter, through the Bishops of Rome down to the current Pope.
Mormons claim restored authority from Christ and His apostles to Joseph Smith necessitated by the complete apostacy of the dark ages when the apostolic authority was lost.
It is this authority issue that sets them apart from the other Christian denominations. Both claim direct authority from Christ, one continuous and the other restored.

I'm assuming you know about Catholics and not Mormons, so I'll tell you the nitty gritty on Mormons. Mormons believe: That God has a physical body and is our father That Christ has a physical body (separate from God) and is out brother. That the Holy Ghost (with the other two) make up the Godhead that is one in purpose (but not form). (ie, Mormons don't believe in the concept of the trinity) Mormons pray only to God the father. Mormons take the sacrament, but bread and water, not wine. Mormons believe that there was an apostasy after the last of the apostles died. That no church was led and directed by Christ himself. In the 1800's God and Christ appeared to Joseph Smith, called him to be a prophet (like the prophets of old), called him to restore Christ's church to the earth, and to translate an ancient book of scripture written in the Americas known as The Book of Mormon. Mormons don't drink, smoke, drink coffee, tea, or abuse drugs. Both make the claim to be the ONLY true church. Mormons get baptized at 8 years old. They also believe that people can go to "heaven" even if they're not baptized or not Mormon (won't go into that here). i.e. you don't automatically go to hell just because you were never baptized in the Mormon church. The LDS church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. There are about 13,000,000 members world wide. ....and you might be interested to know that lds guys are asked to serve 2 year missions when they're 19 years old. ....and to clarify some misconceptions: Mormons are Christians, Mormons do believe in the Bible, Mormons believe that we can only be saved through Christ, and we are not and cannot be polygamists. Hope that helps.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints doesn't accept the authority of the Roman Catholic papacy. They have a rather different view of the Holy Eucharist, and do not venerate Mary or the saints. Mormons do not pray the Rosary. There are a great many differences in Mormon and Catholic theology. Catholics do not view Joseph Smith as a prophet, and do not include his works in the Catholic scriptural canon. That is just the beginning of the differences.

Culturally and organizationally speaking there are millions of differences between the two churches yet they all seem to revolve around the foundational premises of each.

Both churches believe Jesus Christ set up a literal, visible, organizational church with a hierarchy and one person at the very head of the church.

Both churches believe in the salvific nature of religious rites (Baptism, confirmation, communion, etc) and likewise both churches believe that a specific ordained priesthood authority is needed to administer such rites.

The difference comes in *Who* has such an authority.

Catholics believe that the church (and more specifically the priesthood) has remained in tact and unaltered since it's conception by Jesus Christ through the Apostles and down to the Catholic bishops (with the Bishop of Rome as "the head).

Mormons believe that the church (and more specifically the priesthood) was lost through the apostasy of early believers. Mormons claim that it wasn't the Prophets or the priesthood itself that apostatized rather such a massive amount of believers apostatized *from the priesthood* ultimately leaving the world without a priesthood (and subsequently a church). Mormons believe that the priesthood (and so likewise the church that encompasses it) was restored by God through Joseph Smith Jr.

So though any conscious observer of both churches could see the radical differences in specific doctrines of each church, essentially the ultimate claim of each is the same.

Mormons have a book other than the Bible from which they take guidance. Catholics can trace their Popes back to the time of Christ when he said to Peter
"thou art Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church" Matthew 16: 18
(the latin meaning of Peter is "rock").
It is from that Biblical text that Catholics claim a direct lineage to Benedict XVI the Pope of today.

Lots of differences... too many to name...

But they ARE NOT Protestant. Protestant suggests that the founder was once part of the Catholic Church and broke off in "protest" like the Methodists, Lutherans, etc. They came later.... founded by some guy who got his own idea in his head.

They are part of a "Restoration" movement, rather than the "Protestant" Movement.

That's a whole BOOK's worth of study dear lady... far too much to write about in here. You'll be better served by digging in your local library or bookstore and some good sites online.

Too many differences to list. The one similarity. They are both false religions.

First, both are Christian, in that they believe in and worship Jesus Christ. Mormonism is a Protestant religion, meaning one of the Christian religions that doesn't follow Catholicism. Their belief structure is wildly different, their worship practices, ways of living, etc...An easier question is how are they similar, which is that they both believe in and worship Jesus Christ.

One is christian the other is not.
Catholics belong to the Church founded by Christ.

Mormons belong to an American sect started by some guy Smith.
