It varies, depending on speech/language development and personality. For my son, it was well before the age of 1 - he's a chatterbox with a very outgoing personality! But that also means we had to teach him stranger danger at an early age. He knows he can say hi to people, but only when my husband or I are with him. He's also not allowed to tell adults he doesn't know his name, except people like police officers in the even that he ever gets lost. We also had the talk about people touching him. In this day and age, we unfortunately have to teach these things young. I was surprised when, right before my son turned three, a man on the subway asked him his name and my son responded with, "Sorry, Mommy says not to tell strangers." The man was amused, and was understanding.
It's cute and sweet when they start being friendly, but don't forget to teach them how to be safe, too!

It really depends on the child. My daughter picked up on "hi" pretty quick. When we would enter a store and the clerk would say hi, my daughter would say something like "hey."She was about 9 mo(believe it or not) when she began this. By the time she was 12 mo she was doing it on her own. But she has always been a super social child basically from birth. If there were people around, she wanted in on the action! But a more shy child or quiet child may not pick up on this til much later. It all depends.

My son just started. He's twenty one months old and he tells everyone he sees 'Hi!!' It's the cutest thing ever! He's always been super friendly but all of a sudden he's talking so much more and it's one of his favorite words. Some kids take a little longer and some kids are just naturally shy. It really depends on the individual.

My daughter started saying "hi" to others when she was 1 year old, and started saying "bye" and blowing kisses to people when she was 18 months old. She's so cute!

My girl was 8 months when she was waving to everyone she saw. But actually saying "hi" about a year old. She was never shy, so, it depends on the kid.

Well it depends on the child. I know alot of children that happily smile and say hello to me, and they are only two.. give it time it will work out.

At whatever age they feel like! Don't rush your kids into becoming friendly with strangers though, because it could scare them.
