Total peace is stuck because each of us succumb to our egos, wrongly, trying all kinds of things to keep ourselves what we BELIEVE is making us happy, when in reality, due to change and impermanence nothing is really making us inherently happy.
If each of us practiced patience, altruism, wisdom, and turned our backs on that rotten ego that keeps us spinning our wheels in unhappiness, things might change.
One meditation done by Venerable Thubten Chodron mentions this. We're to envision a peaceful land where everybody can be happy and have it's causes, but then she mentions that the reality is that until we change ourselves FIRST there won't be any ripple effect. WE have to toss the pebble in the water to get the ripples, if not, they don't happen.
So, to quote the Four Immeasureables:
May all sentient beings have happiness and its causes.
May all sentient beings be free of suffering and its causes.
May all sentient beings not be separated from sorrowless bliss.
May all sentient beings abide in equanimity, free of bias, attachment and anger.
Remember though... it's a slow process that should happen by default (so to speak) NOT forced.

Until such time as the whole world bows the knee to Jesus Christ the Son of God, then there never will be world peace. Mankind will never be at peace with himself (or others) whilst God is not in his life.
Man will try and work for "peace" even if he has to go to war for it.
There is a time coming when the sheep and the goats will be separated. The sheep who are christians will go to heaven and be with the Lord for ever. The goats will be the ones who know not Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord and will spend eternity out of Gods presence.
Most folk dont like being told they are hellbound so I shall not risk it, however scripture says:
Revelation ch20 v14/15: The unbelievers situation.
"And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire."
Then and only then will total peace reign.
Revelation ch21 v4 The believers situation:
"And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away".

i may well be very happy if that easily led to international peace to unfold around. yet, with human beings the way they're on the instant, there might maximum possibly be a minimum of one individual who observed it as an risk to take over, in spite of if a international chief or no longer. and in spite of if the international leaders did settle directly to have peace, no longer each and all the voters might like it. There are some human beings available that despise peace and basically want violence and chaos. unhappy concern is, i will basically see international peace going on if anybody concept an identical or the two did care or respected different individuals's ideals. Then there does no longer be something to create conflict over.

It may not be possible to achieve absolute world peace. But if we want , we can reduce the voilence and discrmination by practicing the teachings of Jesus Christ, Budha, Mahatma Gandhi, Mohammad and other religious scriptures which preach respect for human values whether rich or poor, learned or illiterate..
Today we are witnessing all this voilence, discrimination and injustice due to greed of certain power centres - they can be political, economical, religious or any others.
Today's child is tomorrows citizen. If we can give good education with values and create a good society for today's child, peace can be enhanced to a large extent.

I agree with trebor88 - b/c of the the fall of humanity our only hope of true peace is Salvation through Christ. The world seeks peace - but it will never be found until Christ comes back to reign - so i agree with Debra - peace cannot be brought about by human means. You ask why isn't peace happening? -- The word of God tells us - there will be a peace agreement coming out of the middle east - but it will be false peace - and many parts of the world will be fooled by it - but those who know God await our Messiah to come with His Authority to reign. Only then will we have true peace. One day it will all make sense.

Hello. Blessings and Peace.
I do not think that world peace is possible until we all reach an amalgative (grouped togther) decision in which everyone agrees to the same thing- this of course is not possible, with all the indifferences ( different teachings have different, and sometimes unpleasant instruction).
Kind Regards

Be the first one to be kind. It does nobody any good if we always expect the others to be kind, just for us to reply in that way. Take the first step and help where you can, smile at strangers and be kind to the busy sales assistant. You might not know what's going on in their lives, how hard their day was and all that, but you can be one person that doesn't make the day worse, but better. Kindness to everybody would bring us a long way.

I've just done an essay on "Christian pacifism" and Just War theory (to do with the "ethics of war")!
Yeah sure, if everyone made peace and loved their enemies there would be world peace. But to believe that world peace is humanly possibly is to be blind to the depravity of human nature. Thankfully by a violent act (his death on the cross), Christ has made it possible for us to be at peace with God who is going to establish his Prince of Peace as King of the new creation...
Utopian pipedream or the only hope for mankind, you decide!
And yes just to add that of course I agree that do one should be forcing anyone else to convert to their way of thinking. In that sense I (lovingly and peacefully!) distance myself from all who think that, whether the religious right of America, Hindu nationalists in India, or Islamic extremists in Saudi Arabia.
Peace/Shalom/Salaam everybody :)

There will be no world peace BECAUSE of religion. There has never been peace in all of recordable history. Why think it will come now? The feble concept of " My invisible god is more powerful than your invisible god" prevails. When a great majority of people on this island Earth believe in dogmas that are thousands of years old I feel that mankinds reign on this planet is short. When reasonable and rational thought prevails, we will have peace but don't hold your breath on that one.

once the human race is gone ,and every mammal and reptile ,and insects can be rather mean ,some plants ,the weather ,the earth both of which are prone to violent outbursts, then at last ther can be peace.nothingness is peace,it is best perhaps to seek peace whithin ones self.
