Certain vitamins, A, D, E and K, are fat soluble and can accumulate to excess in the body. The water soluble B and C are just excreted in the urine.
The major risk is with excess vitamin A. It can cause severe headaches and bone pain. Too much D causes dehydration, vomiting and fatigue. You can research other symptoms.
There are so many myths and half-truths about vitamins. In actuality, it's a case where if a little amount is good, more ain't better.

The weight of the person is important.
Most companies make the rule of an average person that weighs 160 lbs, so if you weigh more than that, taking 2 vitamins a day won't hurt you and will ensure that you get your recommended amount.

Too much of a good thing...some vitamins, if taken in excessive amounts, can actually be toxic.
In addition, if you consume more than you need, you will just pass it (through your urine) so why go to the bother or expense?
