Normally when somebody is unlucky enough to stand on one.

The Geneva Convention states that all minefields be marked but this is routinely ignored especially when the weapon is being used as a terrorist weapon.

Also the group laying mines as a defensive measure to deny the ground to the enemy are required to keep maps showing the areas, again another "rule" either blatantly ignored or the minefields are laid in a hurry with no plan being drawn up.

Such information would give control to the terrorists who create the minefields because they could simply change tactics and more soldiers would get killed. If no one has reported this question it should be, simply for the state of national security.

I saw an answer for this on an epiosode of M*A*S*H* They took a screw driver and poked it gently underground to feel for the mine. They repeated this all around untill they knew if the land was clear. I am sure there are more modern ways of doing this now a days.

If we put on here the ways that we identify them, then the terrorists would simply change tactic to avoid our detection. Hopefully soldiers don't answer this. Remeber OPSEC. Keep TTPs to yourself.

If it is buried properly, you don't. Until it's too late. Steve is right. We have several techniques that we use to determine if something is out of place. But specifics would be inappropriate on here.
