Its very dumb to declare war on a tactic. Thats like saying, you will declare war on flank manueverists. Or hedgehog defenders.

You cant kill terrorists. Anyone can become a terrorist at ANY time. The only thing you CAN do is stop the causes that create terrorists and extremists, and stop inflaming other parts of the world which we have no clue about thier cultures.

this is the 21'st century war.

this war is against an ideology not a group of nations so there is no declaration of war or sign a surrender paper.this is a different war, one that we haven't fought before. our military is great at direct combat and the enemy knows this. they'll try to use asymmetrical tactics like attacking the population that supports our troops. there's also the political front. if there's anything to be learned of the Vietnam war is that we know now what happens when we cut and run. people should accept the reality that this is a LONG WAR . there is no avoiding it and we have to remember THEY attacked US. and for all the time we have spent on Afghanistan and Iraq we had fewer casualties than in other wars. If things are as bad as many people claim then we would have been attacked again and again and that has not happened. that is cause they're good folk who are willing to protect our lives to defend our freedoms. there is no other way to say this but we cannot negotiate with the terrorist. they have made it clear that they want to destroy us. and they tried on 9/11.

There IS no "war on terror". That is the quintessential answer.

It is gratifying to see how many people now see the distinction between a tactic and an opponent you can meet on the battlefield.

How do you win a "War on Terror" there is no one on the other side to sign a treaty...

We call it a "War on Terrorism" but it is not a declared War, Iraq, Afghanistan, Viet Nam, Korea were called wars but there was never a declared War...

The War on Poverty, is an issue of our nations will to assist the weakest among us. The War on Drugs... these are not Wars... The War on Drugs is an issue of International Law Enforcement... The War on Terrorism is similar... it really is a problem of International Law Enforcement....

We cannot win these things through military action... we can only win by reaching the hearts and minds of those who would do us harm...

In the end Diplomacy is a greater tool than Military Force... We do need military force to protect the peace table.

There is no country that is so liberal that it would allow people to overthrow it by force and violence. I agree that you can't win a war against a tactic. But you can either negotiate peace with an enemy, or you can destroy or neutralize them.

The U.S. hasn't had much success in destroying insurgents. That is because we do not really want to make the sacrifices of manpower and funds needed to militarily occupy hostile foreign countries for generations and ruthlessly oppress all opposition using the proven draconian tactics enumerated by Lord Baden Powell in the Boer War (i.e. put them in concentration camps).

So maybe we should stay out of foreign conflicts in the first place. Let the U.N. handle them.

NO.

You can not have a war on an idea.

Everyone is a terrorist, anyone who apposes a government is technicaly a terrorist, anyone who doesn't agree with Bush is certainly a terrorist, read his executive orders it states what I just said clearly, bye bye miranda rights and any and all rights you thought you had.

The reason there are even a FEW people that don't like the USA is because we have been medling in the affairs of other countries, killing people, arming people, backing people, that we have no business getting involved with in any way shape or form, and we have been doing it for over 100 years.

If the USA said "I am sorry" to the world and especialy the middle east, and got ALL our troops out of EVERY SINGLE COUNTRY that is not US property, the hate would stop and the "terrorist attacks" would stop.

Got some bad news for you folks, USA is the largest terrorist organization in the world, we ignore international law, the UN and countries rights to exist, we follow our own rules and are not held accountable to anyone, we bomb inocent people and shoot them to, in the name of "peace", and "democracy"

There's an old saying, "don't want trouble, don't start trouble"
These people are just defending themselves against our illeagal invasions across the world, we are the bad guys.

"Terrorist" is also a synonym for "rebel" and "freedom fighter"

One governments terrorist is another's freedom fighter.
Think on that awhile sheep.

I think the only answer is yes. People don't want terrorists and terrorists acts to happen but what people don't want is a war. Who said getting rid of evil would be easy? And my evil I mean the acts of terrorism.

terrorism is a crime not a standing army. you have to fight it as such. we cant go on deploying our army to every place that might have terror.
if you think about it, it is genius to declare a war on a tactic.
very Orwellian
