My mom was a kindergarten and first grade teacher for 30 years. I, too have a teaching degree, but never taught in a public school setting, and now my oldest daughter is in her 5th year of teaching. Anything handmade, especially by the child is a great gift. Homemade goodies such as bread, cookies, and mixes in a jar are welcome, too. A gift for the classroom such as books, a game, or a toy are appreciated. Gift cards to local restaurants, book stores, teacher stores, craft stores, or department stores (like K-Mart or Target) would be good as well. Many teachers just don't have time to cook and bake like they want as the holidays approach so the homemade goodies are a great help in that way. Also, most teachers spend quite a bit of money out of their own pocket for supplies so a gift for the classroom or a gift card to a place where he/she could buy things for the classroom are great. Restaurant gift cards are just pleasant to get since everyone likes to eat out. Avoid perfume, jewelry, cute-sy things like plaques, mugs, and Christmas ornaments with "World's Best Teacher" on them. An exception to the Christmas tree ornaments is something made by the child. My mom has been retired for 15 years and still puts up every year all the ornaments kids made for her over the years. The best ones are the ones with the year and the name of the child somewhere on it. She has a great time reminiscing about those kids and still sees some of them now and again.

Teachers say a heartfelt thank you note is kept and re-read, and is one of their most cherished gifts to receive. The best gift doesn't need to cost much. So, you don't have to spend a fortune to give a gift a teacher will love. Something that can inspire teachers is a perfect gift idea. You can consider an inspiring book for teachers- “Vision Revision: The Teachers’ Master Key to Career Success”. Teachers like it because the book is primarily a teachers’ guide to career management. You can also consider one-year subscription to the Teacher’s Digest for your dear teacher

Gift cards are always easy - maybe a gift card for Macy's or something like that a nice store. Would need to get at least a $25 gift card if you are going to get one for her. You could also get her a gift card for a nice restaurant to go eat out. Also, if there is a nice nail salon in your area you could get her a manicure or pedicure treatment gift card or gift certificate (only thing is you should include tip on the card or certificate if you do that one). Other than that it's hard because there isn't much info to go on - what do you know about the teacher. If you are strapped for cash you could always bake some cookies - everyone loves freshly baked cookies.

I think gift certificates are ideal. One for a restaurant is always nice - give the teacher a night out! Or you could do something more practical, like a Target gift certificate. That way you can let her pick something out for herself - whether it is something to use in the classroom or for her personal life. Of course you could always work on something with your child to give to her. The home made gifts work for teachers as well as parents. She will really appreciate any gift or acknowledgement, however.

I encounter plenty of teachers since I work at an office supply store and what they need is a moment to relax and they need to save some of their money that they spend on school supplies. So, I think a gift certificate to pamper her nails or a DVD rental would be excellent.

A gift card for lunch or a teacher supply store . Teachers do so much (and have to put up with unruly parents and students) and some times have to use their resouces for their class room.

how about a gift certificate to a spa or salon for a nice "treat"? e.g. haircut, massage, manicure, facial, etc. doesnt have to be for the whole amount, but the thought is nice. teachers need a break from the norm.

Last year we made a hot chocolate mix from a recipe and homemade marshmellows. We put it in a decorated mason jar, and tied on the marshmellows with a note

Gave them to teachers, bus drivers, religion teachers, etc etc
