The more we move away from the Sun the colder life becomes. It's not the Sun punishing us, rather we are doing it to our selves. The more we move away from God the colder life becomes. Again, we are doing it, not God.

America became powerful through its scientists and creative minds, legal immigration, and the locale and size of our country, and because of the brilliant men who designed our Constitution -- not all of whom were Christians as you would define such theists.
Our current President who claims to be religious, a Christian, with a "faith-based" Administration, lied to the American people in order to invade the sovereign country of Iraq, thereby alienating some of our staunchest allies in Europe and increasing the National Debt into the trillions. The "sins" of the Bush Administration are legion! I doubt you can place the blame for the sad state of our national affairs onto the ACLU or atheists and agnostics of our society!
Our schools are also doing a poor job of educating the future adults of our society, and at least a portion of that problem is the responsibility of those who are more concerned with imposing the teaching of creationism and other Christian concepts in public schools.

Rubbish.
America became powerful becasue it has a large population, extensive natural resources and was not bombed to hell in WWII. A democratic political process was a big help. The strong industrial complex was already there because of the above.
Now America has rested on it's laurels, China, broken in WWII by the Japanese occupation, mismanaged by foolish and paranoid leaders, has pulled itself together and looks to be the next world leader.
Religion is part of America's problem. People thinking that they know better than the expert scientists. People thinking that they are O.K., God will look after them. These are what is destroying America. It is the small mindedness of Americans thinking that they have a God Given Right To Be #1 that is stopping them from doing what needs to be done to keep their position.

Read Jared Dianomd's Guns, Germs and Steel. The diseases carried by the Europeans to the Americas as well as superior technology in the means to murder (guns) were the primary reasons for America's colonization and ultimate rise to prominence. By saying that this is "god's plan" you make god out to be a pestlential, genocidal freak.
And you wonder why so many of us are atheists?

I remember watching the movie "The Longest Day". In it, both John Wayne and a German general (I forget his name) both say: "Sometimes I wonder whose side God is really on". The God that I believe in does not take sides in any aspect of human life....not in war, not in football games, not in whether you get the job or not. To me, that is trivializing the concept of God.

We became powerful because we thought our principles of democracy and freedom gave us the right to take an Imperialist stance.
Christianity threatens to take away the very principles upon which this nation was founded.
Did you also notice that the Roman Empire failed to continue in greatness once it accepted Christianity.
(I know the logic is flawed here, but I'm jokingly making connections as you are.)

No, not God. I am sorry, I do not believe this. We became powerful because we had a massive amount of space and a ton of resources. This country is founded on slavery, greed, and genocide.

Slavery and an abundance of natural resources that had yet to be tapped. God had nothing to do with the latter.
