"Didn't the communists attempt that?"

Well, yes, and the Catholics, and the Muslims and the Romans, and the Nazis, and quite a few others. The religious right is trying it today in the United States, with that "this is a Christian Nation" and "War on Christianity" stuff.

I do agree with you - asking people to change their religious beliefs is not the road to peace. Forcing or coercing them to do so is most certainly not the road to peace.

I am an atheist for very good reasons having to do with my basic honesty and willingness to follow where the evidence leads. I believe that you are a Catholic for very good reasons as well. Neither of us should be asked to change our stance. Instead we should be asked to learn to live with each others' stances.

With the world going the way it is, I'm surprised atheism is not the fatest growing religion! Perhaps faith in the human spirit might be a good start. Think of all the men and woman who have sacrificed so much for you to have what you have today. They had faith for you. The air you breath, the trees you see, flowers blooming, nature has faith in you too. Perhaps you have a very good friend--how would you feel if she were not a friend anymore. Pretty sad. There are so many people that have no one, only their faith that someday they will be loved --which is something most humans want and need; the human race would not have survived! Take a break from thinking about religion and God and just be thankful for having food, shelter, clothing and hopefully family and friends. Try to be at peace with what you have! I think that faith will soon follow naturally--we all have this inside us when we are born.

There is a place for religion in World Peace. Dogma though, can be a hinderance. I think the Popes over the 20th century have been great examples of how to further Peace in the World through religion. My favorite pope was John XXIII. He was a genius when it comes to finding Religion's place in Modern World. Also, as I'm a follower of PierreTeilhard de Chardin's Theology, especially Omega Point, Religion has a central place in furthering the World. (Not in Holding it Back, like many do, but in moving us towards Parousia!

If people lived the Beatitudes of the Christian Faith or the 5 Precepts of the Buddhist and the equivalents in the other particular faiths there would be world peace.

Faith ethically and humanely lived is the solution not the problem

I don't know how it was in other countries, but in my country it was as simple as that: they were atheists and they wanned everyone else to be. They have never given any clue why they wanned it, they simply tried to change everything (the name of the christmas in "winter holidays" for example), they put down a few churches, they did not allow speaking about god in public. They never mentioned that it's for world peace and I highly doubt it - especially since our poresident, Ceausescu, wanned to isolate our country and cut off most communication and imports, so where is the world peace in that?

I agree. Peace will never be found in the world until after the second coming.

The communists had no interest in world peace. Their goal was absolute submission to the state, and they viewed religion as undermining that goal.

Peace without faith? I would never be at peace with my self lot alone the world if I did not have my faith.

His question was not about governments forcing people to give up their religion. That question suggested that we should all willingly give up the self imposed shackles that is religion.
Of all other aspects of human nature, religion is by far the most divisive. If we willingly gave up religion, then our reasons for hating each other would be given up with it.
