In a few weeks I am going to be going in for an MRI for my knees. I have had pain and swelling in my knees for over 4 years now. I played soccer all through high school and now that i'm in college my physical activity has slowed a little. However my campus is HUGE and i walk probably 5 miles every day back and forth b/w classes and my dorm up and down stairs. are there any suggestions on what I should do prior to my MRI to help with the pain and swelling. I've tried everything for them, even quitting soccer for a year now sadly. Also what sorta of things are supposed to be done prior to an MRI (its in the afternoon)?? The doctors think something might be wrong with the tendons or ligaments and that I might need Physical Therapy.

to make a comment about the 4th answer:
I actually have limited flexibility in my knees to the point where i can't straighten them all the way.

I was a gymnast for 9 years however i was never very good so i have sadly not retained much of my flexibility from it

I would suggest wrapping your knee in an ace bandage, taking ibuprofen, ice, and resting your knees as much as possible. An MRI is a fairly simple procedure and there shouldn't be anything you need to do beforehand, if there is anything your doctor should have notified you. You will have to remove all metal that you are wearing before the MRI though. Good luck!

MRI, nothing except remove metal, so watches rings and alike. I am just pondering if you might have hyperflexation of the knees as you state you played a lot of football. That means that your knee joints move beyond what would be a normal range. Almost like being double jointed. Yes, PT will sort the problem, as to if you will be able to play football again, I cannot say. Good Luck

Light compression and elevation are really the best ways to reduce this type of edema. You can also use cold packs after activity.

There should be nothing special you need to do before an MRI other than remove all jewelry.

I can't remember having to do anything special before my MRI. While you wait for it though, you can use hot and cold packs. Alternate. It would really help it you could stay off of it but I see that would be a problem. I'm due to go in for one on my knee. Already had one replaced.
