I noticed you conveniently forgot to mention all the pain, suffering, and misery the atheist communists have brought to bear on humanity.

Its a perfectly capitalistic, dog-eat-dog world out there - the market of religion. No one is going to step back and let the competitor win. And if someone does take a step back, there are religions who will make sure that it will take a spear and take a step forward, to impale the one who has generously stepped backward so its foolishness. And unfortunately, in the religion market, there is no global regulatory control, no body who can manage it all. It CAN never happen. It shouldn't. Imagine what would happen if it did, say a common religion of Islam. Your family would be living with a hijab or a burka all their lives like you were living in 7th century Arabia, and you have to take a break from whatever it is you are doing every 3 hours and prostrate yourself while looking towards the center of the Arabian peninsula or risk having sulfuric acid thrown on your wife's or daughter's face because apparently, or so it seems that God doesn't like women to show their face to the world !!!! Or imagine, like the guy who has written the reply above, who thinks he is Christian when the poor fellow doesn't even realize that Jesus was God's representative on earth (literally, His Son), and was not the 'only GOD' as he says. And he's talking about everyone else bowing before him. So tell me, how are you ever going to get any agreement on this? The world is full of people who cannot accept anything else except their own crazy ideas !! Trust me, we are better off where we are, and wait for global warming to kill us all off, all 9 billion of us.

Religion is just an organized meeting of the masses. World peace is a goal of not just religion but of scientific, political, atheists or basically almost everyone in the world.
The first or second answer was right, I would give up my religion easily to achieve this goal. But my faith would remain strong, especially since there already IS world peace. :D

No, it is an unrealistic scenario. As long as there are depraved humans on the earth, there will not be world peace, until the man of sin arrives and gives a false peace to the Middle East for 3 1/2 years.
Luk 12:51 Do you think that I came to give peace in the earth? No, I say to you, But rather division.
Joh 14:27 I leave peace to you; My peace I give to you. Not as the world gives I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, nor let it be timid.

No, I wouldn't. I have to maintain my connection with the Sacred in order to help ensure this peace that you speak of. And all of my fellow parisioners would also have to have peace in their hearts to influence others and create a positive energy that chases away all the animosity that leads to war Lastly, I'd want to have a preacher that discourages our boys from enlisting and have someone in my church working with the supposed enemy to find a better solution than more killing.

Religion only poisons everything to the extent that believers choose to take it upon themselves to force their beliefs on others.
Since my religion prohibits pushing my beliefs on others and requires me to respect other's choices, giving it up would have no effect on World Peace, except to lessen the chance of it (since we alleviate poverty and suffering all over the world by nonreligious good deeds).

Religion, in and of itself, doesn't cause anything. It has no will, and no conscience (good or bad). It is merely used as a tool to do evil (or good), just as with a computer, firearm, or camera.
"World Peace" assumes that all conflict will be eradicated, which is contrary to human nature, with or without religion (though it has played a huge part in conflict throughout history).
The only way to do this is to either brainwash humanity, or to commit genocide.
Remember, disregarding religion, governments have killed over a quarter billion people over the last century. Some of the deaths involved religion, but most had to do with the hunger for centralized power... the latter being a popular 'tool' for folks who desire world 'peace' (read: domination)

If everyone did, there pretty much would be world peace. Religion's only purpose is to get financial benefits for its perpetrators, control the masses, and to inspire hatred in other people.

As much as I don't care for organized religion, and do agree that it has been used to promote a lot of death in the world. If there were no such thing as religion, people would just find another way to motivate their minions to kill the people on the other side of the fence.

I love this question.
This question gets to the heart of one of the issues I have with Christianity. Personal salvation at the expense of anything. Christians are so focused on their own salvation that they can't see that it can (quite often) get in the way of, well, being Christian. Where's the compassion, the love, the kindness and sacrifice for others when you refuse to give up your own faith or religion for the well being of others?
I've said this to Christians before and I'll say it hundreds of times more, I'm sure: I do not want to have anything to do with a religion that makes me so paranoid about my own salvation that I'm willing to persecute, harass, hate, judge, belittle and be intolerant of others.
I'd rather be nothing. And so I am.
So, I have no religion to give up. I consider myself to be doing my part in achieving world peace.

In a second! Religon is a way to teach values. Beliveing and being faithfull to God is not religon. Religon has become a way to collect revenue. If we collected all the mony spent of houses of worship and used that money to end world hunger, we'd find way more peace and faith not only in God but our fellow man.
