I have a friend whos parents are strong republican Christian family. Big house, lots of money, expensive tvs and computers, pretty normal up to date family. Except 1 thing. He was discouraged as a child to like anything to do with magic. Even just pretending you were Superman was a sin. And now his little brothers are having that same child hood. He was not allowed to watch tv shows that containd magic.
Could not watch.

Smurfs
carebears
he man
thundercats
rainbowbright
the hobbit
ninja turtles
and many more

He could watch gi joe and scoobydoo but not much else

practicing witchcraft is one thing but the care bears?

Are all Christian reformists this looney? Hell I'm Baptist and even I can see the crazy in it.

I think its brainwashing them and takeing away their creativity. Its kinda like a legal form of child abuse.

Honestly they do not deserve children. Their daughter got pregnant out of wedlock and the mother kicked her out and said to her that she hopes the baby dies.

I do not think that all Christian reformists are this close minded, but there are some. I think it is fear that makes them like that. I have been a teacher for a great part of my life. I found that some children were not even allowed to watch educational films because some people thought that was the work of the devil.

Many of these people are not that well educated and think that any type of freedom brings corruption. I agree that some of these programs are not the best and I might not have allowed my children to watch some of them on their own. I find though that the best thing is to sit and watch tv WITH your kids and explain why something might be wrong or right. You then teach them to think for themselves instead of teaching them NOT to think. They will get to an age where it might be hard to control the things they see, so to teach them how to be critical of what you watch is more important than teaching them not to work.

Having said that, I think that children watch way too much tv and that they can learn to be creative by playing outside and by doing crafts. Magic is not inherently evil. God made a lot of magic in the universe..

If you are a child, playing make believe, its ok.

I agree that some of TV shows you mentioned might not be good for children. When you say not allowing children to watch bad TV shows is child abuse, shows your lack of parenting skills.

Actually I have not watched most of them, except for the Turtles and the Hobbit.

When you start calling something child abuse, you imply that perhaps the parents don't have the right to keep their children. I never heard of anyone whose lack of Care Bears in childhood traumatized them to the point of abuse. However, I agree it's ridiculous.

I agree. It's this kind of closedmindedness that is deminishing the creativity in our country. Playing pretend is good for children. It helps them develop their minds, and increases learning ability. It certainly it not evil, or damning.

Part of the Christian stroll is acknowledging that we're sinners. But we also are exhorted to not sin. That is our target. God units the bar prime considering the fact that he has prime expectancies people.

in today's world it is hard to see that as acceptable. but you gotta respect a parent's wishes, give them honor until they are full-grown. i am a christian, and i enjoyed all the cartoons of my generation, and i know how to discern good from evil, right and wrong. if there was no such thing as television, this wouldn't even be a question.

and no pretending isn't a sin.

Good thing that neither of you believe the Bible 100%...

Deuteronomy 21:18-21 -NIV If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father and mother and will not listen to them when they discipline him, his father and mother shall take hold of him and bring him to the elders at the gate of his town. They shall say to the elders, “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious. He will not obey us. He is a profligate and a drunkard.” Then all the men of his town shall stone him to death. You must purge the evil from among you. All Israel will hear of it and be afraid.

This is pitifully close minded. We should encourage our children's use of their imagination, regardless of our professed faith.
