I may be receiving a promotion at work, which would entail some work from home as well as some weekends. I heard that in similar cases, I can do something like purchase a computer for the "home-work" that I will be doing, and have my corporation pay for it?

Is this true? Where can I find more details? Thanks!

You should definitely speak with your employer about this. All companies have diffrent policies on re-imbursement for company expenses.

Never assume anything -- always ask.

Nope, not true.

Normally, when you're working out the details and/or receiving your letter of promotion, you'd be speaking with your employer about these very questions. They may have a laptop for you to take home, etc. Don't assume any of this. Talk to your boss.

As well, talk about your expected additional hours worked. Will you receive pay for them? Are you to log them? Will you receive time-off in lieu?

I work as a contractor. I have a legal home-based business, an office at home and yes, all of the tax write-offs.

That is not true. I believe you are thinking about when you purchase items yourself and then are able to take them as a tax deduction if you itemize. Keep all receipts. The problem is that you wont get all your money back. For example if you pay $1000 for a computer and are in a 30% tax bracket then you will only get a $300 break on your taxes.

It is only possible if your office allows you to do it. Ask your boss. therwise, you may want to check with a TAx Professional about the tax advantages of purchases you make for work which are not reimbursed.
