It is a rumor that it was used to jam in the teeth of the dead. The notch, found only on older tags, was used to hold it in the tag making machine. New tags have no notch

There was a notch in dog tags so they could be easily snapped apart and jammed in the jaw of the deceased as to identify the body. The other was taken by the person who found the body and placed the other tag in their mouth. that way they knew who was dead and could later recover the body. nowadays they have two seperate dog tags for the same purpose.
Edit: Its not a myth thank you very much.....ask anyone in the actual military and they will tell you the same thing....its an identification system

Its there to hold the tag in the stamping machine and has nothing to do with Urban Myths about being used to open the teeth!
