better design of pivots, links and suspension. more adjustments for the suspension as well. sturdier construction but definitely lighter materials should be used. more gears for uphills. other than that, i would not change a thing. oh maybe airbags. lol...

There is noooo way one can say how a mountain bike of the future will be.

Even then, I don't think there are going to be many significant changes from today's bikes.

Frame material, I think that still most of the bikes will be aluminium, but carbon fiber will also grow.

Probably we will see more internal gearing (like Honda's RN01, Nicolai, and others), but still, I don't think they will predominate.

Maybe we will see some ABS brakes prototypes, and more 'advances' suspension damping, new (read remodified and relabled) suspension designs touting the best active yet firm pedaling, bla bla bla....

er.. sorry, M R is right... there has been some rumors about a new wheel-less super mountain bike is his garage thats kept under wraps with a sticker that says it can only be opened until 2010... ;)

In the future, mountain bikes will have no pedals. Instead, the will be driven by gently caressing the bottom bracket spindle with your ankles. The increase in effeciency will allow you to travel three times as far for the same effort.

Or... They might just have fancier suspension and more gears. Though how anyone could need more gears now is beyond me...

The current 'craze' is the 29'ers. Bigger wheels, more momentum. Taking this one step further, I see 36" wheels making rolling more efficient in the future.

The metallic chain will be replaced by a super-strong fabric belt. Discrete gears will be replaced by a continuously variable ratio assembly that is light and simple -- two opposing cones. There will be only one shifter.

I have one in my garage but am not allowed to distribute photos of it at this time. Please ask again at a later date.

EDIT: I didn't mean to let this information slip out. Now every PI and foreign agent will be lurking about - THANKS GUYS!
