I am doing this for tax reasons.

Okay let me clarify... I am married to a man who is an immigrant who received his green card because we were married. We have been together for years and are married legitimately.

A couple months ago we separated for various reasons. We both hope to work out our marriage, but we are not living together at the present. Immigration Services need to see that we are living in the same residence in order to not reverse his green card and send him back to his country. This would BREAK MY HEART

I need to make sure I put the same address on my W4 so INS has no reason to invalidate our marriage, which is completely valid and legal.

Okay that is the gist.

The only reason to put and address on the W-4 is so you can get the information from your employer when tax return time rolls around in February. If it scares you, have him get a P.O. Box address.

Your address is not used for withholding purposes.
However, the address you put on your W-4 is very important. All employers are required to submit a copy of your W-4 or acceptable alternative to each state's New Hire Directory; any other document is not submitted. So, this information is very important in efforts to collect unpaid child support and prevent over-payments of social security and unemployment.
If you're intentionally creating a false address, that's illegal. Also, if your employer knows about and helps you falsify your new hire documentation, depending on the state, they can be fined up to $500.

If you're trying to evade some kind of taxes by claiming residence someplace you don't really live

(1) it's illegal, and if and when you get caught you will pay penalties in addition to the tax you should have paid in the first place, and

(2) the address you put on your W-4 has no effect anyway since it doesn't affect your taxes

The address on your W-4 is meaningless to anything.

Yes, you can. Shouldn't be an issue.
