My mother is a homeopathic doctor, and she told me that many women and children wore dried mint clumps on a string, because it smells good *people didn't take baths often, and sewage was usually hanging about in the street* and the minty oils can discourage rats and other mites, ticks and lice from inhabiting people, which was a very big issue in the spread of lyme disease. Spearmint usually turns brown and wrinkles up when dried, so there's your yummy-smelling turd necklace.
