I was a member back when I had my first job after graduating. I paid my subs for a year, but then when I actually needed their help they weren't interested. One of the reps told me the shop steward would love to deal with my case as it was against a manager who he had been gunning for for a while. But he never contacted me, or returned my calls. I ended up dealing with it myself, and getting a satisfactory conclusion. I felt like asking Unison for my subs back. I've never bothered with unions since then, I just represent myself.

I was a member of Unison for years; I believe in the Trade Union movement. I gave up because i work in the voluntary sector and there was nothing they could do to protect my job etc. I was on an economy drive last year and cancelled my subscription. Generally, I think they are good at representing their work force.

Not anymore, but I used to be a departmental rep.

I found them useless at local level, too adsorbed with large, national campaigns and big issues.

Basically, I used to be in NALGO, when they merged with NUPE to form UNISON, I think they just became too diverse, trying to represent too many often contradictory interests.

Absolutely not,they are rubbish.

Don't touch them with a barge pole,,I was a home carer with social services and they let us down time after time, the council were allowed to stop our enhancements for working weekends and nights, they let them make us (women) walk around dangerous housing estates alone at night up to 10pm.

We asked could we take our mobile phones with us and we weren't allowed to,or our cars.

Save your money, thats all they are after.
