Aspirin (acetyl salacilic acid) was discovered because native populations would chew the bark of willow trees to reduce pain. When chemistry progressed to the point where the active compound could be identified, ASA was it.

It is used as a pain reliever, fever reducer, anti-coagulant (blood thinner), prophylaxis against cardiovascular disease and stroke, and lately they have been experimenting with it with cancer patients. It is truly a marvel.
