My son is eighteen months old and can't stand unless he pulls up on something. He "runs" on his hands and feet but won't walk. He is walking around furniture. He will walk when someone is holding his hand but he is very unsteady. He just can't get his balance.
He "talks" normally for his age and does everything else appropriate to his age. There are no signs of Autism.
I have seen his doctor who told me to come back in two months if he still won't walk. They will test him for problems then.
Has anyone else experienced this with their child? He is getting medical attention and I don't need advice about that. I just want to know how people FINALLY got their late-walking babies to develope balance and start walking on their own.
Thanks!

- He has the kind of walker where he stands behind it, holds on and pushes.
- He just saw the doctor last week who said he wasn't too concerned yet but that he should come back if he isn't walking by the new year to be evaluated.
- That wooden spoon trick sounds like an excellent idea. Thank you!

When did you see the doctor? Was it recently? Doctors usually don't get concerned until around 18 months. It sounds like your son is behind, but not terribly so. The fact that he moves well on his hands and knees and can cruise the furniture well is a sign that he has the potential to catch up. Try getting him a push walker - not the dreadful things that the baby sits in. Rather, it is more like a little cart that the child stands behind and pushes. Let your son practice using it - under close supervision, of course. You can also use the wooden spoon trick - beat him with the spoon until he has no choice but to get up and run away from you =) Sorry, I just couldn't resist. All joking aside, what you do is take the spoon by one end and let him hold the other. Walk with him like this until he feels comfortable. As he gains balance and control, gradually hold on to the spoon less and less until he is walking without you holding it. This worked wonders for my son, who took his first steps at 11 months but still took his time with walking. One day, he walked clear across the floor with his wooden spoon, only to realize I wasn't holding him. Just keep at it, and recognize that even if he is a bit behind, he can catch up and I'm sure he has other areas in which he shines. Good luck and have fun with him!

not too much help here, but i do know that kids who use walkers tend to walk later, so if you have one, throw it out. my kids took their first steps for things they were really interested in getting to, so you might spend time when he's pulled up holding something really interesting up just out of reach (but you're probably already doing that). beyond that, i'd just be aggressive with the doctor about getting him some help when he goes in two months. i do know kids who were late walkers and had trouble balancing who had luck with special inserts for their shoes -- but i'd guess that's something that would be recommended when and if the doctor decides it's a physical problem. good luck.

Maybe try those push toys where they stand behind and push it. They have one out now that looks like a big blue hippo that picks up blocks. I think it's by fisher price. These sort of toys helped both of my kids learn to be more steady on their feet and feel more confident walking. Good Luck!

He'll do it when he is ready. I have a friend who's son didn't start walking on his own until he was about 20 months. He's a perfectly normal 6 year old now.
