If he's in that much pain, he should have it taken care of before a month from now... if it's an infection, it can travel~ at least he should be on antibiotics, which may help a bit.

As far as diet goes, instead of food he can drink liquids, like Ensure... it'll keep his weight up, as well as getting nutrients into him that he may not be able to get without regular eating.

Soft diet foods should include: eggs, soups, pastas, oatmeal, mashed potatoes, puddings.... even 'baby' foods would be better than not eating at all...

My sincere best wishes to your Dad~

You might try buying some soft noodles and putting some butter or pasta sauce on them. You could even buy some Mac and Cheese in a box. Those noodles are small, soft and don't require much chewing.
Also, some soup would be good as long as it doesn't have large pieces of vegetables or meat. Chicken noodle would a good option there.
Also, energy/protein drinks like Boost and Ensure are great to make sure he meets his nutritional needs.
This site has a list of soft foods, but some of them may require more chewing than is comfortable for your dad so try to pick and choose the ones you think would be easiest:

Is there any way he can get in sooner even to another Dentist. Emergency room. This could get worse instead of better. Eating soft food is good in itself but if there is infection this needs to be addressed soon.

Progresso chicken soup--also their split pea and ham and lentil. They are all soft enough and are delicious. I would also get him some yogurt (if he likes), custards, tapioca pudding, etc. He needs lots of taste or he'll go nuts! Good luck to him--tooth pain is the worst.
