Sometimes I get so very scared that Im going to do something wrong and my hamster is going to die.... I dont know I have never had a hamster before but I always do what I am supposed to. Cleaning his cage, feeding him, etc.
Well does anyone else do this or am I just plain crazy? LOL. I have had him for about a month, his name is Tweak because hes so twitchy and also after Tweak from South Park.

i still have my first hamster. he is a year and a half. when you feed him, mix some plain oatmeal with his food. they LOVE it! it also has lots of fiber. clean his cage every week, give him water every 3 days...... ect... also you can feed him small amounts of cucumber peels, apples, bananas, and carrots once and a while. there are lots more you can feed him, but these are the foods i feed mine. just chill, i used to be paranoid like that to, but i had no fun with my hammie. also let him run around in his ball, and get him some chew toys and stuff. be aware, you hammie will escape sometimes, just keep your closet door shut and your room door shut. if he he does escape than he will come out when you walk into the room. also the best bedding to get is Carefresh bedding because it is environmentely safe and is made from recycled paper. pine and cedar bedding can kill you hamster. dont leave you hammie in the way of a draft (the fan or air vent) this is one of the number one causes in hamster deaths. also make sure the water bottle doesnt make the bedding damp. because if it stays damp then your hamster will get a disease called wet tail. This IS the number one cause in death of a hamster. gve your hammie lots of love and he should be fine!

hope i helped!

When I had a hamster. I cleaned his cage once a week, and changed out the bedding about every 3 weeks or if it started to smell. If you are still worried about it try to find a book on how to care for a hamster. They can be great pets. We named our hamster Ham, cause he was very cubby but very cute. make sure he has fresh clean water, and make sure his food is still fresh, but it sounds like you are doing a good job with him

your doing just fine! I have had up 20 hamsters at one time when i was only 10. You should be cleaning the cage once a week. It was my chore on Sundays when i was little. When you tweak out of the cage to clean it just be sure to put him in a clean safe place where he cant get out and can breath. Clean the cage with hot water and soap. You can use a little bit of bleach BUT MAKE SURE YOU REALLY CLEAN AND RINSE IT WELL. Hamsters like to play so make sure you have running wheel or a cage with a little playground in it. Most pet-stores will have cool stuff.
Don't be afraid of it either. When you pick him up, gently grab the whole body with one hand and support him with the other. Try not to get too much in their face or make fast movements in their face, it scares 'em and it might nip at you. Most important, they're nocturnal. So don't freak out if you see him sleeping all day long, they'll be up playin all night long.
Food- they like to gather their food and bury it in their nest so a shallow dish or even just a small handful in a pile will be fine.
Nest- they like to make their nests like mice do and hide and sleep in it. If you take one piece of tissue and tear it into strips put them in a pile in the cage and he will make himself a very nice soft fluffy nest. He'll love you for it.
Good luck and hope this helped.

You wont kill him by doing what you are doing! It sounds like you are a good hamster mom. We just lost our boy, "Dale" to old age. Got him from the pet store and he lived with us for 3½ years!!! We just made sure he had fresh food, water and love. We did have a wheel in his cage and some little toys for hamsters, and he loved them. I did change half his bedding... the half he used for a bathroom, I left the half he had his fluffy nest in. He didnt like that change so I only did that once every 2 to 3 weeks. Good luck and you will do fine with him.

It sounds like you're taking excellent care of Tweak. I love the name, we're South park fans too & I know what you mean about them being 'twitchy'-- our little guy's a twitcher as well.
Being worried about our animals is normal & we're constantly worrying about our multi-species family. Hamsters *do* look really delicate, esp. the dwarf breeds.

Don't sweat it! :) When I got my first bird I would always be scared that my bird would be dead after I woke up, since there's many things you can't feed them, and many things you can't use in the house, as there are with hamsters; but after a while you just get used to it, and you stop worrying.

unlike there apearance there quite hardy and it sounds like your doing everything to look after it there is one thing id mention though they do get bored easy so play with him at least once a day there also good at being able to be left alone for a couple of days providing it has a full water bottle and his little dish of food is full so your not going to kill him easy ps. (its illegal for someone to leave them completly alone for more than two day).

oh they do have one weakness: their teeth although they grow constantly and they need to with all the knawing they do if one snaps and the other doesn't it can lead to them not being able to eat so check their teeth you can do this by holding him in your hand and with your other use ur thumb and pointing finger to gently pull back the skin around his mouth. if hes prone to biting this could be painful for you but its for his health. enjoy your hamster!
