I dont know the answer to this. However I do know that the Boeing 787 Dreamliner will be out soon and will use 20 percent less fuel for comparable missions than today's similarly sized airplane. Resulting in better environmental performance.

The most recent year for which complete, global data is avilable is 2000. In this year the aviation industry produced 670 million tons of carbon dioixide.

Two data sources I examined put the expansion in the avaition industry at 52% and 56% since 2000. This would mean total annual emissions now of between 1.018 and 1.045 billion tons. There has been some imporvement in aircraft fuel efficency since 2000, however, most aircraft in service are considerably more than seven years old so these improvements are going to be of more relevance to future total emissions than current total emissions.

If you chose a figure of 1 billion tons a year I think you'd be within 5% of the true figure.
