JetDoc is almost correct. Effective in Feb 2009, all analog OVER THE AIR broadcasting will stop. After that you will either have to have a digital tuner in your TV or a set top box. Cable systems will continue to distribute some programming in analog format for some period of time depending upon the particular company. If you have a cable box you won't have any problem continuing to use you existing analog TV. If you have an analog TV used for over the air reception you have several options. 1) replace it with a TV with a digital tuner. 2) switch over to cable. 3) buy a set-top converter box that has a digital tuner built in that outputs to your analog TV. I've heard that the US government is making available $40 coupons towards the purchase of the set-top converter box. I don't know what it takes to qualify for one of these, however. BTW, display type (plasma, LCD, CRT) has nothing to do with tuner type. I've also seen/heard that some retailers are pulling analog only TVs off the floor and selling only models that have a digital tuner built in. Seems like a good plan to me.

No, not true, BUT...
All ANALOG TV's will become obsolete on January 1st, 2008. After that, television stations will only be broadcasting in Digital format. That means if you have an older TV set, and receive your TV signal from an antenna (rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna,) you will need to get a digital receiver, or a new TV.
If you have cable or satellite TV, your current TV set should continue to work normally.

the old style "tube" tv is being phased out. best buy has already gotten rid of all old style tv's and is only offering the newer style tv like flat screen lcd and plasma and projection screen. but they aren't offering "plasma only" there are other options available.
